NIDAS Is Now an Officially Recognised Young Carer Friendly Organisation
We’re proud to share some big news: NIDAS has officially been awarded Young Carer Friendly status, presented by Nottinghamshire Carers Association, in partnership with Young Carers Notts, Nottinghamshire City Council, Nottinghamshire County Council, and the Nottingham & Nottinghamshire Integrated Care System.
What does Young Carer Friendly status mean?
This recognition shows that our team has been trained to spot and support young carers — children who look after a parent, sibling, or family member, often quietly, and often without anyone else realising.
Young carers can be found in every community. They might be managing medication for a parent, translating for a family member, comforting younger siblings, or simply making sure the household keeps running. Much of this goes unseen, by schools, by services, and sometimes by the family itself.
Why this matters in the context of domestic abuse
Domestic abuse doesn’t only affect the adults in a household. Children carry it too — sometimes as carers, sometimes as protectors, sometimes just trying to hold everything together for everyone else.
A child growing up around domestic abuse may take on responsibilities well beyond their years: managing a parent’s wellbeing, shielding siblings, or trying to keep the peace. These children are young carers too, even if that word is never used to describe them.
Achieving Young Carer Friendly status means our team is better equipped to recognise these children, understand what they’re carrying, and make sure they’re offered the right support alongside their family — not overlooked because the focus is elsewhere.
Thank you for all your support
